Netgear FS105NA Switch 5Port Metal Reviews

With switch prices coming down to about -per-port, it’s hard to justify buying anything less than a 10/100-switch for all but the most cost-conscious buyer. As most 5-port 10/100 switches have the same capabilities and cost about the same, there’s not much to distinguish one from another. Still, I particularly like the Netgear FS-105 5-port switch. Like other products from Netgear, this switch is a little nicer than the competition because it has:- Nice sturdy metal construction instead of plastic. The case also has a grounding tab in case you’re using the switch in a (electrically) high-noise environment.- Connection status indicators built into the jacks, so you can easily tell which cable is connected and is active. (The “vistajack” feature.)- Right-angled barrel power connector which reduce the likelihood of disconnecting power accidentally.- An easy-to-access switch to toggle port 1 between station mode and uplink mode. Unlike some hubs where two jacks are wired together, this design prevents accidentally shorting a station to an uplink.- Screw-mount notches on the underside allows for easy attachment to the wall, underside of a counter, etc. With a 1000-MAC address buffer and 200 Kbytes-per-port packet buffer, this switch can easily handle the typical traffic load of small- and medium-sized networks. The Netgear product is not the cheapest 10/100-switch (check out the D-Link Fast Ethernet Switch, for example), but for overall design and value-for-money, I still like the Netgear the most.

I have been replacing my ethernet hubs with switches (because the throughput on a switch is much better than on a hub). After extensive review, I decided to get one D-Link 5-port switch and one Netgear 5-port switch, both auto-sensing for 10/100 rate. The truth is, they both work great! They both perform well, and were equally easy to hookup (no software to deal with). I will add one thing, and that is that the D-Link box was a much nicer design than the Netgear. First of all, it is much smaller (the picture of the D-Link here is deceiving). Secondly, the Netgear has the LED lights and the ethernet ports on the same side. For my setup, I prefer the ports on the back and the lights on the front. I think the Netgear switch was fashioned more for a rack. Style aside, a big thumbs up for both of these switches!

D-Link DGS-2205 5-Port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch Reviews

My model is the DGS-2205 with the 5V power adapter. Like a previous reviewer, I noticed that I wasn’t getting anywhere near gigabit speeds to my LaCie Ethernet Raid device. Well, that’s because the LaCie Ethernet Raid Device is a slow pig.
After connecting my Mac Book Pro and my Mac Pro to the switch, I started offloading data to the Mac Pro.
Sustained throughput was 320 megabits per second with long bursts up to 720 megabits per second. At this point, the hard drive on the Macbook Pro was the bottleneck. Normally, I don’t care for D-link products, but this little switch is quite the gem.
I’ve also noticed no noise from the unit, even when transferring large amounts of data at near wire speed.

Works Great, Clear light indicators, good product.
There are 2 versions of this on the market. There is a early version of 7V DC and the new rev 5V DC. I would take the 5V units only.

NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100) Reviews

I had been looking at the FS116 for some time, hoping for the prices to come down. Recently, I was able to get one at a good price from Amazon so I jumped on it.This switch, unlike many of the Linksys products, is made of *metal*. It is VERY solidly built and quite small – not much taller than the network jacks themselves. It does not have any fans and runs only slightly warm to the touch…. EVERY port on this device is now uplink capable, not just one port “with a button” as the heading indicates. For me, this was a pleasant surprise as I have several ethernet cables that are designed for uplinking and with this switch, I can use them whenever I need to due to the auto-detection on all 16 ports.I really like that the LEDs and cables come-out of the front. The trend in consumer level devices is to put the cables on the rear. This does not work for me as I have my “network center” in the basement and all of the cables approach from the front (note, front-connect is how professional-level equipment is built and the fact that the Netgear uses that also harkens to their power-user-level equipment).Anyway, I have been using this switch transparently for a couple of months now. It functions just as a switch should: without a thought. It just works.Mike

I wanted to upgrade my home network from a 10M/sec hub built into my router to a 100M/sec switch. I probably could have gotten by with an 8 port product, but I’ve wired up a few outlets to a patch panel and didn’t want to have to walk to the basement and patch around as I moved around the house. This 16 port version seemed like a good way to go.The product is very different styling than other Netgear products I have (not that I cared). It is small, not a much larger profile than the plugs themselves need, and the case is very sturdy and solid. With no fans, it makes no noise. My only negative comment is I would have preferred a standard 19 inch width for rack mounting, but others will prefer this more condense case. Fits on a shelf easy, or you could mount it to the wall with screws on the underside. And the end result — much faster home network! This would be a good solution for anyone with a larger home or small office wired network, or someone who hosts LAN parties. 16 ports will connect a lot of people!

Netgear GS608NA Giga Switch 8Port Reviews

NETGEAR’s GS608 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is a good product with nice clean lines. The one I have actually works flawlessly for my needs. The problem I have is that I have noticed that there is a wide variation in performance depending on the version of the switch that you get. If you have a v1, you will not get full jumbo packet support, thereby limiting you to 20 MBps. If you have v2, you will get full jumbo packet support, but non-windows computers seem to have hardware issues interfacing with the ports. And now that I have gotten to use the version 3 rendition in a Windows only situation, I can say that the performance was good. But I can’t help but wonder, what happens when I have to hook up one of my Unix or linux workstations in that room? What if I have to connect a Mac? Will version 3 have the same compatibility problems as version 2? So my main gripe is, why didn’t Netgear just scrap this product line and create a new product with a new model number if they new they had hardware problems with different revisions? Those buying from Amazon will probably get version 3, but if you try to buy this at a brick and mortar store all bets are off. Depending on how long they have had inventory, you can get any of the three. So the moral of the story is, definitely try to avoid versions 1 and 2 if possible.
How do you know which version you have? On the bottom of my switch, there was a white sticker with the standard power rating info and random information. Towards the bottom of the text it had the model number with *v3* appended to it, with no spaces. So if you have v3, the actual model number will look like “Netgear GS608v3*. The same goes for v2. I believe that v1 doesn’t have any special markings on it, though I don’t have one of those handy to verify that.
As to speed and performance, the v3 definitely works great. Each port is represnted by a number on the front of the switch. You will know that it is running in gigabit ethernet mode and connected to a cable if the port is lit up green. So if you see a green 1, 3 and 4, that means each of those ports are in use by network cards that are GigE capable.
Since all three of these are still sold under the same model number, I have to average out the performance of the others with the latest revision. As long as you get the latest revision, you should be OK in terms of features and performance at the higher end of the speed limits of gigabit ethernet. But as for whether or not all the problems with alternative TCP/IP compatibility, I have to test that a little further before I will feel comfortable that they have solved the problems of v2. If that happens, I may revisit changing this rating but until then I think this is a good device that still has some risks associated with it.
Enjoy.

Like so many other small home office users, I have recently upgraded my network to 1000mpbs to help increase productivity. Unfortunately, I originally purchased a GigE 8 port switch from another mfg. that used a fan on their switch, a VERY noisy fan. After a month of listening to what sounded like an airplane engine, I tossed that unit and purchased this 8port Netgear GigE unit. It is SILENT. Basically a plug and play item due to its unmanaged nature, I have had good data thru put and no problem. It comes with a small clip on stand for vertical storage if desired. The unit is finished in an attractive gray and chrome exterior. It is also small enough to live on a desktop without sucking up valuable real estate.
So, if you are looking for a switch that will not be stored remotely in some closet, this is the one that will keep the peace in your office. A+ *****

Netgear GS605NA Giga Switch 5Port Reviews

I bought one of these units several months ago because I was constantly moving 500MB to 6GB MPG files between several of my regular computers and my DVRs and moving files this large takes quite a while at 100Mb. I hoped Gb speeds would help a lot. I did some timing and I was able to obtain about 3x shorter transfer times on my local LAN with everything connected to the Gb switch. My problem was that my house was already wired with CAT 5 cable and Gb ethernet really requires CAT 5e cable to get consistent speed. With my CAT 5 cabling, the speed was very intermittent–one time much faster and not the next.
I know this review should be about this product itself and so I’ll say it’s a fine product and I’ll probably buy another one when I finally decide to re-wire my house. But inexpensive unmanaged switches like this are commodity products and this one is not a whole lot different than any other so I just buy whatever is cheapest.
Just make sure you have CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling before going to Gigabit and expecting Gigabit speed.

I just purchased this switch for a home network just hoping to solve some router issues. I ordered it from work so I could not recall if my 3 year old Dells would do Gigabit or not.
Sure enough they did and this thing just works like a champ and no fan noise like some competetive brands. The transfer speeds are exceptional.
The manual completely left out the meaning of the LED colors. A quick web search answered the question.

NETGEAR FS605NA 5-Port Fast Ethernet Switch Reviews

This switch is as advertised. It works out of the box, without any problems, setups, uplink switches, or anything else. Just plug and play.Silent, fan-less operation. However, it does get a bit warm to the touch. If fully loaded (using all ports at high volumes of traffic) and running in warmer room, overheating may become an issue. Even so, I’ll take that possibility over yet another noisy fan in my office.

When you review a switch either it works or it does not. I have the Netgeat FS605 installed two switches down stream from my cable modem and it works without a hitch. The next issues with a switch is noise and heat. In these categories the netgear FS605 is awesome. It is operating 24 hours a day and cool to the touch. Best of all I cannot hear anything when it is turned on. I have some netgear switches with fans that let you know when they are on. Not this one. Great for the home theatre area where you want quite. I use it to pass the ethernet from my playstation to my server that uses QCast to play avi on my TV. Netgear FS605 is a keeper.
