Gateway NV7923u 17.3-Inch Laptop (NightSky Black) Reviews

Review by James Reiter:

I looked around for about two months for a new computer. When my search landed me on this one I was a little hesitant. But the features that come with it are great. When doing research the ” new ” intel i5 processor was the way to go. It runs fasted than expected. Better than the core 2 duo. Which I use on a daily basis. The 64bit system is great. The hard drive at 500gb is more than expected. Windows 7 very nice and I was a windows XP person. Hated vista. The screen size big at 17.3 inches and very clear. Hooks up easily to any TV with the HDMI port. Had no problems playing CD’s and DVD’s. I would suggest getting a wireless mouse and keyboard though. The laptop itself is light weight. A few minor problems when opening I had to let the computer run all programs before I could use it. If you are looking for a new computer I would highly recommend this one for the features and price. Shopped around for months and could not find one.

Review by R. Aziz:

I’ve had this for 2 weeks now…and I think it is worth more than 9

Pros:

large 17″ HD screen with beuatiful display

500G HDD

fast i5 core processor

wireless card

multiple USB ports

eSATA port

card reader

dual layer DVD burner

4G memmory

Win 7 OS

cons:

no bluetooth

no lightscribe

no bluray support

nuisance software preloaded

no sleep charge port

this laptop feels comfortable, even with its size. the sound is great.I would advise anyone to remove Norton from it and use McAfee or any other antivirus, because Norton slowed it down so much. Feel free to remove other bulkware. The recovery function from gateway is great to remove errors and return to factory settings.

Overall, the negatives about this computer pale in comparison to its positives. The main configuration aloows this machine to be relevant for at least 2-3 yrs without a major upgrade. The only processor stronger is the i7 which is not needed for routine computing. the turbo boost feature on the i5 compensates for that.I bought this because of its value for money after painstaking research. i seriously considered the HP dv7 series and the Toshiba L500 as well as sony vaio; put put together the screen size, components and extras and this comes out on top.

Toshiba Satellite T135-S1330 TruBrite 13.3-Inch Ultrathin Laptop (Black) Reviews

Review by Geoffrey T. Tudor:

Very fast and responsive laptop with expansive battery life. The 1366×768 screen is sharp and very bright too, with much crisper whites than the other 3 LCDs on my desktop. Solid build quality on this and whisper quiet, compared to my Acer Aspire 4530 14inch that this replaced. Total usable capacity on drive shows at 455GB out of the box. I’m not sure whether it’s the 4100 processor or Windows 7, but this machine screams compared to my prior Vista laptop with an Athlon X2 dual-core QL-60. Performance with Microsoft Office Beta 10 is also exceptional, with Microsoft Excel opening in milliseconds compared to seconds on the Acer. I’m a suit spending lots of time on planes, and not a gamer–so I can’t comment on how it performs in 3D graphics but that’s not my use case anymore (unfortunately). They keyboard is a bit cramped–but you quickly get used to it after a few days. And the trade-off for thin and light far outweighs having a much larger keyboard.

The biggest bonus is that my machine did not come with the usual bloatware that plagues most other new laptops, so the out-of-box experience was smooth and painless. For the price, I don’t think you can find a better deal: 4GB RAM, Win 7 64 bit, 6+ hour battery life and a half-terabyte hard drive for well under a grand. There may be smaller and faster laptops out there, but not for the money.

Review by P. Altaffer:

I just received this laptop a week ago from Amazon. I have a Toshiba Satellite P205 I got in late 2007. It still is going strong BUT it is a beast..17″ and heavy. It was fine at first when my time was spent at my home office, but a bear to travel with.

I happened upon this one at a local office supply store and fell for it right away and after much research found that Amazon had the best build out for the best price! EVen better than Toshiba!

My thoughts at 1st were to keep my “beast” going as my home computer and just take this baby on the road..but I think that will be too crazy to keep everything sync’d up over sharing the wireless network.

I was able to quickly set this baby up! I figured out how to do the easy transfer over my wireless network and am almost fully set up on one computer. This computer is very fast and though I was used to a 17″ monitor, I have not really felt like I am missing that extra screen. The keyboard is cramped in comparison but I am getting used to it. I do find myself making more typing mistakes. I do find that the bar at the bottom does take a bit more effort to push down but I learned a trick the other day I never learned before. I never realized you could just tap on the mouse pad to go where you wanted to go! I also figured I would be using a mouse anyway. SO I got a logitech lap pad that has a pull out mouse pad that has made this easier to use witha mouse while in my lap!

I did the recommendations for changing the sound options so I didn’t have any initial issues with low sound as described in other reviews of similar models. I am downloading the driver update right now as and added measure

I do not miss the optical drive at this point. I almost considered the U models because it had the built in optical drive but that would have been a HUGE trade off in battery life! SO far I have gotten up to 6 hours of battery on this. I could have gone longer but I had to replug in when I was in the middle of doing something that would take longer than what was left. I am lucky to get just over 2 hours of life on “the beast”. I bought the Samsung optical drive recommended here when I bought the laptop and that worked great to load software into this. Is small and light enought to go with me on longer trips just in case. I hardly used the drive so I know I made theright choice to choose battery life over built in drive.

I was able to stash this baby in my purse yesterday, go to a client and sit in a marathon meeting for 6 hours without having it plugged in! Huge plus!

I am still getting used to Windows 7 quirks..but so far I am happy with this one. Always liked the toshibas I have owned or worked on in the past. Expecting to LOVE travelling with this one this year and putting the beast to rest! Great price and great little machine so far!

Acer Aspire AS7740-6656 17.3-Inch HD Display Laptop (Blue) Reviews

Review by Artset Outset:

I am overall satisfied with this laptop. It seems to be solidly built. I am using it as a desktop replacement and do not care about portability or battery life. The integrated Intel GMA HD graphics is working well with video. I don’t know about gaming performance.

Pay attention to the SW you use. 64 bit and quad core do nothing unless your SW is written to take advantage of them. Video generally does not benefit from either capability. I used VLC Media player for nearly everything and the current release does not.

If you have not used a laptop with the touchpad off center and separate number keys, you should go to a store and try it before buying. I am struggling to adjust from my old 4:3, 15.6″ display. If you plan to use the laptop in your lap, you will naturally center the display in front of you resulting in a longer reach for your right hand to the home keys. This criticism applies to larger screen laptops in general.

Pro:

Excellent performer for my purposes.

Excellent display.

Touchpad disable button is a good idea. I previously downloaded Touchfreeze to prevent the cursor jumping around when typing.

Except for the memory card reader, all connections are on the sides.

I like the matte finish interior surfaces.

Con:

In general the user interface could be improved. Every one of these complaints are traits of many other laptops. Specifically-

Major-Keyboard keys are completely flat resulting in many more typos. If I don’t get better, I will go back to my old Dell for Office applications. While trying to write this, I have hit the Caps Lock instead of “a” at least 10 times.

Minor-Separate Delete,Home,Page Up, Page Down, End are not in traditional locations so I leave the Num Lock off and use the number pad.

Minor-Touchpad is not as good as my previous Dell. I like it better when it is recessed.

I probably will never get used to the touchpad buttons being fixed at the middle. You must depress them at the outer end of the touchpad. I find this clumsy.

High gloss exterior of the case shows fingerprints.

I use the separate arrow keys alot and they are very small.

No recovery disks included.

I skipped Vista, so Windows 7 is a bigger leap for me from XP. So far, I can’t see the point, but it has been stable. Look closely, most everything from XP is there, just disguised. Maybe I will eventually find something new that makes it more than just a way for Microsoft to make more money. As much as I fear it, the implementation of Cloud architecture might end this BS of changing the interface with every revision to the SW. I hate struggling to find the things they move with every revision.

Review by GlobalHoaxing:

I usually buy my electronics through [...]. Newegg didn’t have this model so Amazon got my business on this one and I’m glad that I happened to stumble across it.

I wanted 2 things in my PC. One was a large screen and the other was speed. The 17.3″ screen is perfect. Not as bulky as an 18.4″ but larger than a 15.6″, so it’s a good compromise. The new i5 chip is great. I didn’t see the point in buying a PC with the old INTEL chips or AMD. I buy a new PC maybe every 6 years or so and considering I could have spent a lot more on a model by another manufacturer with the older chipsets it just makes more sense to buy this….which is really what makes this PC such an excellent purchase.

Usually when you find something that’s a good buy you’re making numerous compromises. That’s not the case with this Acer. From the new chip to the 500 gb hard drive to the 4 USB’s, card reader, VGA, HDMI, and dual-layer drive it’s top-notch and is of an excellent quality build. Nothing feels cheap.

I have always despised notebook PC keyboards and anticipated using an external keyboard. Well, surprise surprise surprise….with the touchpad turned off, I find this keyboard works great. The keys are a good size for my stubby fingers, I don’t mistype on it and find that the straight down touch you use, instead of the slightly angular touch I like on the external keyboards, works perfectly fine. The keyboard has a great feel to it as well. Rest your palms on the lower portion and go to work. I won’t need an external keyboard with this PC. I definitely give it an A.

The screen is excellent. It’s very sharp, equally bright and does justice to all my pics. Video is excellent and although it does not do 1080p HD, it does do lower resolution HD perfectly fine and on the 17 inch screen it looks fantastic. In fact, watching YouTube or other videos in full-screen mode looks good, but will look better when these on-line videos start sending out higher resolution streams than they do now. DVDs are excellent.

When I made my purchase decision I had looked at 6 or 7 other brands and found that the ACER beat them all on price when you compared the options it came with. The biggest dilemma for me was to get a model with a blu-ray drive and an i3 chip, or to go with the much faster i5 and not have blu-ray. For me, the best decision was to take the faster chip. I believe it would likely provide for smoother video and graphics overall and I could always add an external blu-ray drive later, if I really wanted to.

The only other factor about this PC which concerned me was that this model uses the integrated INTEL video card. I have used PCs with that in the past and found that I preferred having a separate graphics card. But my research indicated that INTEL is using a different methodology on the motherboards that have the new i series chips so I decided to go with it. So far I am pleased, but since I have not used one with a separate graphics card, I cannot say whether or not the separate graphics card offers any advantage in terms of performance. My guess is that a separate graphics card with 2 meg of dedicated RAM in addition to the 4 meg the system comes with might perform better under certain situations, however the software for this PC automatically dedicates 1,756k to video memory of the main 4mb and it’s all DDR3 so I wonder if the difference would really be that noticeable. The additional price would be though, so I think this might well be the better purchase.

One disappointment…the sound on the speakers is very low, and since it’s Dolby Home Theater with Virtual Surround Sound I expected more volume from the PC itself. Internet radio is hard to hear, but if I watch a video and use Windows Media Player or Winamp, that software boosts the sound a bit more. I use external speakers whenever I can and will continue to do so with this, but these internal speakers really are low volume.

If you’re in the market for a new notebook this is a great PC. It’s a great buy too. To borrow a phrase from a mortgage broker who advertises locally here….”It’s the biggest no-brainer in the history of earth.”

Toshiba Satellite P505D-S8000 TruBrite 18.4-Inch Laptop (Black/Silver) Reviews

Review by David Dressler:

I hate laptops. The idea of a computer you can misplace is anathema to me. When I had to buy a laptop, therefore, I essentially bought a desktop with a carrying case. That, in a nutshell, is the 18.4″ Toshiba Satellite. It is far too heavy to really be considered “portable.” It is big, powerful, has a gorgeous screen, and generally does a very nice job of trying to fool me into thinking I have a desktop computer.

The keyboard lights up, which is a very nice feature. The keys are full-sized and easy to press. The biggest drawback with the keyboard is the series of multimedia buttons on the side of the keyboard. They are FAR too easy to press accidentally, which means a stray finger can unintentionally mute your sound, change the volume, dim the screen, etc. Also, pressing one of those buttons results in a loud beep, even if the laptop is on mute.

One of those annoying buttons on the side of the keyboard is for “eco-mode.” Despite the fact that the laptop has an 18″ monitor which, at the time of my writing this, is the largest monitor for any laptop on the planet, Toshiba has somehow managed to earn an “Energy Star” rating for this behemoth. The eco-mode dims the monitor somewhat and stops the keyboard from lighting up. In bright sunlight, this mode is unacceptably dim. Otherwise, it worked fine. Even without eco-mode, however, this computer somehow manages to typically use less than 75 watts of power, which means it uses about the same energy as one incandescent light bulb. Quite remarkable, when you think about it.

Despite the “Energy Star” rating, the battery life on this laptop is pathetic. Coaxing even an hour without being plugged in is a stretch. DO NOT buy this laptop if you plan to use it routinely in places where plugs are scarce. As for heat, this laptop runs remarkably cool. Even after several hours of intensive use, it was cool enough to place on my bare legs.

The speakers are Harman/Kardon, which is shorthand for “much better than your typical laptop speakers.” I used to plug my laptop into my stereo system at home, but I found that that was absolutely unnecessary. Even for hardcore gaming, the speakers did an adequate job by themselves.

The best feature of the monitor is its size. The picture is crisp, although it had trouble in direct sunlight. It renders at 780, not 1080. My understanding, however, is that to truly appreciate a 1080 resolution, you need a large monitor–like 37″+. I certainly never have had any complaints about picture quality, even when streaming movies from Netflix.

There are connectors all over the place, including an HDMI input, which means you can hook your laptop to your HD television and watch video from it. This is a nice feature; I use Netflix streaming video a lot, and it made it simple to watch the video on my larger TV set. Also, one of the USB ports has a neat feature that allows you to draw power from it even when the laptop is turned off. This means you don’t need to turn on your laptop in order to recharge your phone.

The touchpad is large and easy to use. No complaints there. I am not a huge fan of touchpads (once again, my anti-laptop snobbery rears its ugly head), so I used a bluetooth mouse most of the time. The bluetooth functionality on this laptop is very good.

Toshiba sells this as a gaming computer. This is something of a misnomer. They have a true gaming laptop, the Qosmio. A quick glance at the specs of this computer makes it clear that it is really a high-performance computer, and not perfectly suited for gaming. The graphics card is decent but not great, and the hard drive is a little slow. That said, most games will play on it. I had no trouble with even some of the latest titles, such as Dragon Age: Origins. The biggest problem was that there would be a longer-than-appropriate pause when the game would load a saved game or enter a new area. Once the game actually started, the graphics were acceptably smooth. I did not test it on some of the real computer-killers like Crysis or Fallout, since I am not a first-person shooter kind of guy. I did play some online games like Guild Wars and World of Warcraft, and was pleased with both the wireless connection and the graphics.

To sum up…

PROS: Monitor, Backlit Keyboard, Powerful, Great Speakers

CONS: Multimedia Buttons, Battery Life

Is this the right laptop for you? It depends on your needs. If you want a portable computer that can be taken anywhere on a moments’ notice, then you need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for a desktop replacement, or a high-performance computer with decent gaming capability, this may be your next computer.

Review by Dana:

Well, if you are looking for a huuuuge laptop.. this is the one. Its got a lot of nice features and its really pretty and the sound is great. I bought this for game and movie play which is perfect. Everything runs fast and smooth. I love it. I also needed lots of memory to store tons of photos. This does all of that for me… not to mention the pictures look ten times better on this screen. Love it. Some negatives, The laptop is very glossy.. shows lots of finger prints. Also, be aware that microsoft office is only a trial software package. I guess I didnt read the fine print. Also, not sure why the serial and part numbers didnt work when trying to register my laptop online. ?? Anyway, Just keep in mind that this is HUUUGE for a laptop. Its not so easy traveling with it at all. Its rather heavy and there are hardly any choices as far as case covers and cool bags to carry it in go. I may end up buying a toshiba net book for travel. I gave five stars because TOSHIBA is awesome. I love this laptop. Pretty much can use it as a desktop because of its size.

Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1125 LED TruBrite 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Reviews

Review by John A. Lewis:

Amazon merged the two models into one page and fixed most of their info, but they have the battery life listed as nine hours in one place and six hours in another; the six hour figure is correct (thanks, Philip!).

Also, the cheaper model (T115D-S1120) has a single core 1.6 GHz processor, not a dual core 1.5 GHz processor. This is currently still incorrect on one part of the page.

Review by Michael Tutaan:

I have a 16 inch Toshiba dual core/4gb ram I purchased a year ago and loved it, but I wanted something mobile with a longer battery life. I love Toshiba quality and decided they can have my business again. I was looking around for a netbook but then this came out. I went with the dual core just in case I needed to photoshop and watch movies on it later. I’ve looked at 10.1 inch screens, and they were just so tiny and have to scroll a lot when when reading online. 11.6 inch screen is perfect, I don’t notice the screen size being a problem. Screen is beautiful, watching HD shows and movies look fine and play fine.

I have had this for about week and have done mostly web browsing and haven’t ran it through the ringer with memory hog programs life photoshop yet but it feels just as fast as my 16 inch dual core with 4 gb of ram. I usually get over 4.5 hours battery life on bright settings but I put it on eco mode which dims the backlight and I get 5+ hours.

I watch youtube videos with ease but speakers are not the best which doesn’t matter since I use headphones on it. Hulu, Facebook, you name it all work just as fast as my laptop. Itunes works great.

One thing was common in reading netbook reviews was that you can’t expect it to replace your regular laptop or desktop. I honestly think this product can, especially if your an average user who watches youtube, listen to music, web browse. I didn’t see the need to upgrade Ram yet and probably won’t so I don’t sacrifice more battery life.

One complaint is that is does get warm when I’m using it constantly but not like it is burning my leg warm. I’m used to the track pad but prefer using a wireless mouse. I picked up another logitech wireless mouse which works perfectly. If your thinking of getting a netbook, or just a laptop that has a long battery life but don’t want to sacrifice power, this is it.
