Besides the advantages, biomass also has the disadvantages. Almost every new alternative has both of them. That’s why lot of researchers try to find the best one for our life.

The Advantages of Biomass
- Theoretically biomass is an inexhaustible fuel source
- Biomass is available throughout the world
- There is minimal environmental impact when plants are not directly burned but other processes are put in between to generate energy e.g. fermentation, pyrolysis. For example, alcohols and other fuels produced from biomass are efficient and comparably clean-burning
The Disadvantages of Biomass
- If not done properly the use of biomass energy can contribute to global warming and pollution if the biomass is directly burned
- On a small scale there is a net loss of energy. More energy must be put in to the growing of the plant mass than can be recovered through its conversion
- Biomass is an expensive source of energy, both in terms of producing the biomass and converting it to alcohols
